Jensen Huang and Indonesian Leaders Collaborate to Advance Localized AI Innovation, Marking a New Chapter in Indonesia’s Digital Sovereignty
Nvidia’s Vision for Indonesia’s AI Future
In a groundbreaking announcement during Indonesia AI Day in Jakarta, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang reaffirmed the company’s commitment to fostering artificial intelligence (AI) development in Indonesia. Speaking with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto via teleconference, Huang underscored AI’s transformative potential in driving industrial progress and societal advancement. Nvidia, he assured, will partner with local enterprises to ensure that AI innovations benefit Indonesia’s diverse population.
Huang’s discussion with President Prabowo came as the latter attended the APEC Summit in Lima, Peru. During their conversation, Prabowo highlighted Nvidia’s critical role in Indonesia’s future and extended an invitation for Huang to visit Indonesia for further collaboration. “We are eager to welcome Nvidia as a long-term partner,” Prabowo said, emphasizing the importance of aligning global expertise with local aspirations.
A Booming AI Ecosystem in Indonesia
Huang’s participation in the Indonesia AI Day event coincided with the launch of a new initiative by Indonesian telecom giant Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) and tech conglomerate PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia. The companies unveiled Sahabat-AI, Indonesia’s first open-source large language model (LLM) tailored specifically for local linguistic and cultural contexts.
One of the initial applications of Sahabat-AI is Hippocratic AI, a healthcare-focused platform designed to enhance medical services for Indonesian users. IOH is supporting the initiative through its AI cloud service, leveraging Nvidia’s cutting-edge GPU technology. Earlier this year, IOH imported an initial shipment of 1,000 Nvidia GPUs to fuel the development of AI solutions tailored for Indonesia.
“Sahabat-AI embodies Indonesia’s vision of digital sovereignty,” said IOH President Director Vikram Sinha. He explained that training AI on regional data ensures alignment with Indonesia’s linguistic and cultural nuances, empowering citizens to fully benefit from AI’s potential.
A Collaborative Approach to AI Development
The significance of Sahabat-AI extends beyond its technical capabilities. It exemplifies Indonesia’s tradition of gotong royong, or mutual cooperation, a principle that has guided collaborations among industry, academia, and government. In addition to IOH and GoTo, the initiative involves contributions from Singapore-based AI research centers, Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and startups like Glair.ai and Datasaur.ai, both backed by Jakarta-based GDP Ventures.
Jensen Huang celebrated the launch of Sahabat-AI as a milestone in Indonesia’s AI journey. “This initiative demonstrates how localized AI models can reflect the unique cultural and linguistic needs of a nation,” he remarked, highlighting Indonesia as a global leader in leveraging AI for development.
Global AI Insights and Local Impact
Alex Yao, co-head of Asia Pacific technology equity research at JP Morgan, predicted that AI will be a critical driver of consumer behavior and corporate activity in the years ahead. Innovations like robotaxi models and healthcare-focused AI solutions are just the beginning of how AI will reshape industries and everyday life.
Indonesia’s AI efforts have not gone unnoticed on the global stage. Last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited the country to discuss standards for AI use, further underscoring Indonesia’s growing reputation as a hub for AI innovation.
Despite the global accessibility of AI tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Meta’s Llama, and Google’s Bard, researchers have pointed out a gap in AI’s cultural and linguistic adaptability for non-Western audiences. Experts believe training AI systems on regional data is vital to creating tools that resonate with local communities.
Nvidia’s Role in Indonesia’s Digital Sovereignty
Nvidia’s pioneering use of GPUs in AI has cemented its status as a global leader in the industry. Huang, who has become one of the wealthiest individuals in the world, emphasized that Nvidia’s technology would play a central role in advancing Indonesia’s AI landscape.
By aligning its global expertise with Indonesia’s aspirations for digital sovereignty, Nvidia is not just fueling technological innovation but also setting a precedent for equitable AI development. As Indonesia charts its path forward in AI, partnerships like these promise to bridge the gap between cutting-edge technology and localized solutions, ensuring a brighter, AI-driven future for the nation.
The launch of Sahabat-AI and Nvidia’s commitment mark the dawn of a new era for Indonesia’s AI ecosystem, showcasing how collaboration can harness the power of AI to empower communities and transform industries.
